The history of the School of Liberal Arts of Nanjing University dates back to Sanjiang Normal School and Nanking University (Huiwen Shuyuan), founded in 1902 and 1888 respectively. It first became a department of Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1914. Then for different periods, it successively belonged to National Southeast University, No. 4 Zhongshan University, Jiangsu University, National Central University and Nanjing University. As Nanking University, which evolved from Christian colleges, merged with Nanjing University in 1952, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature was set up. It was renamed School of Liberal Arts in 2007.

National Tsing Hua University is a research university located in Hsinchu City, Republic of China (Taiwan). Although the university was first founded in Beijing, after the Kuomintang fled to Taiwan in 1949 following defeat by the Communist Party of China in the Chinese Civil War, NTHU was re-established in Hsinchu City in 1956.
