Gal Cohen

Gal Cohen, a visual artist, lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Cohen is currently studying MFA in Fine Arts in Parsons The New School. Born and raised in Israel (1986). Cohen’s main mediums are painting, drawing and installation. Over the last years, after graduating the B.F.A in Fine Arts (from Bezalel Academy of Art&Design, Jerusalem), she studied Gender studies in TelAviv University, exhibited and showed her art in exhibitions and art projects, took part in artist residency (Camac Art Centre, France), opened an alternative art space in Jaffe TLV and did some curating of various exhibitions.

"My artistic production explores potential interactions between facts and fiction as my main ambition is to generate new narrations concerning collective memory, social inherited conventions, history, identity, gender, and otherness in contemporary societies. In other words, my work is a concrete attempt to critique dominant modes of normality. The imagery and content I deal with include social criticism, representation of gender identities and roles, awkwardness and ironic scenes, practical and conceptual questions regarding the painting medium, and more. My work contends to break down the barriers of compartmentalization and painting conventions. I am interested in cancelling the hierarchies between different painting methods and creating an artistic language that merges them all together." -Gal Cohen
