Ortrud Sturm

I use only wood as the material for my sculptures. I respect the natural properties of the wood and include them in my sculptures. These sculptures are mostly made of one piece. I work with my chainsaws for the most part. Because of that, the surface of the wood has a kind of rawness. A cut made in wood is always irreversible; unexpected cuts are a part of the process. My sculptures are geometric constructions, following horizontal and vertical rules, repetitions and sequences as well as negative and positive forms. I reduce my sculptures to elementary forms such as cubes and cuboids. Positive and negative space, the use of colour and the play with balance is a means of expressions in my work. With cuts and openings, I create transparency and provide new perspectives in my sculptures.
