Inspiration for Jamie’s art comes from many sources. He loves diverse cultural symbolism, experimenting with primitive design methods and modern computer technologies. He enjoys doing research, studying artistic techniques, and the process of creating interesting visual ideas.

Nature, architecture, music, and visual rhythm excite James. Prospecting for ideas is his way of life. He also likes to mimic accidental images he sees on random surfaces in stores, parking lots, and old billboards. Hunting, fishing or just hiking through nature is linked to his creative process. He believes nature is inspiring and elevates his soul.

ABOUT JAMIE BLACKBURN

I am a Columbia, South Carolina-based artist who focuses on several media. Mixed media is the most interesting and exciting for me to create in my paintings. I sometimes experiment with collages to combine several materials that create contrast and texture. I earned a liberal arts degree from Lander University, which inspired a self-taught journey within my art. Painting quickly became my favorite form of expression. I find that my marks made by accidents and artistic experimentation have created award-winning images for me in my career. Living in South Carolina, I’m inspired by the mountains and beaches that I have enjoyed, both of which remain artistic influences of my work. I enjoy sparking creativity in others through my art. This brings me great joy and inspires my artistic process. I discovered my art can bring people personal healing, hope and joy. Not just practicing but engaging in the creative process excites my senses and frees my emotions. Art is viewed differently by each viewer. There is a kind of mystery in the process of creating and sharing art that is inspiring. Being present is important while creating my art because that is when the process reveals my true self and purpose in life.

from an interview WITH JAMie

Q: How did you become an artist?
A: Born with a brush in my hand, pursuing my best work has been a life's journey. A liberal arts degree from Lander university paved the way for self-taught techniques in several artistic disciplines, and from there painting became my favorite form of expression and abstraction in my style. Accidental markings left behind by industry and artistic experimentation created award-winning images throughout my career. Living in South Carolina afforded me the opportunity to enjoy the mountains and beaches, both of which remain artistic influences.

Q: Where do you collect the inspiration from?
A: Engaging in the creative process both excites my senses and frees my emotions. My energy is transferred onto the surface resulting in an emotional record of that moment in color, line, and movement, this release produces enthusiasm and a sense of accomplishment.

Q: What type of medium is your favorite one?
A: Painting is my primary process and experimenting with several mediums and mixing them has proven to be the most interesting and exciting discovery. Collage is another method I use to combine several materials, layering them to create texture and contrast.

Q: How does making art impact you?
A: Being totally present during the creative process reveals my true being and purpose in life. Communicating through images is no mystery however the image itself can be very mysterious. Interpreting the image is unique to the viewer, this exchange is personally satisfying.

Q: Why did you decide to organize workshops for kids and youth?
A: Affirming the creative nature in another person, old and young alike, gives me joy and hope that they will also find creative freedom and discover personal healing that making art came to bring.
